Thank you 2017!
What a year 2017 was for my debut novel Mothers and Other Strangers. Somewhere along the way, I stopped blogging and wanted to share some of the highlights of what happened along the way.
I traveled around Canada and the United States, having events and connecting with readers and booksellers who never ceased to amaze me with their kindness and generosity, not to mention their passion for authors and books. A lot of the places I had never been to before like Providence Rhode Island, Ann Arbor Michigan, Chicago Illinois, and Calgary Alberta. Traveling by plane or car, I'd arrive at each destination, tired, happy and as soon as the events were over, eager to do it all over again.
Being a debut author means getting the word out any way I can, and I was lucky to be able to do so via blogs, book groups, literary festivals, library conferences, in store events, group panels, meet and greets, book signings in person and Skype, and of course on social media. No matter the method, I felt lucky to be able to connect with the people who had generously given their time and resources to my book, and who were getting the word out to readers everywhere.
I've learned so much from this experience and I'm glad that the skills I built up over years of hustling it as an actress and often producing my own work, could be put to good use as an unknown author. I wrote letters, sent books, visited countless bookstores all in effort to spread the word about Mothers and Other Strangers, and people listened. I'm happy to say that the book has already done three printings, gotten great press, been featured on some "Best Of" lists and continues to sell, more than 7 months later. I really feel that along with all the wonderful people who helped me, I did all I could.
And while I'm not done, because there is always more to do, my job is to help Novel #2, A Fictional Life, get ready to leave my desk and go out into the world. Novel #3 has already started demanding more of my attention and this winter I'm going to hunker down and give it to her.
I'm excited about 2018 and all the good things it has to offer and I am grateful for all that 2017 has given me.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. And Happy New Year! May your year be full of love and laughter, health and happiness, and new exciting adventures.
